Superstition no.5- Pillow’s Direction /枕の向き

Which direction do you put your pillow?
There is the superstition related to it: putting a pillow toward the north would bring bad luck.

Let’s see the story behind it.
According to Buddhism, Buddha passed away lying with his head toward the north and his face toward the west.
Therefore, deceased people in Japan are laid with their head toward the north so that they would go to another world without getting lost.
That’s why people avoid laying with the same posture of the deceased people.

There are also similar practices or taboos related to the image of death.
We avoid drying clothes right-side out and drying clothes facing the north because the north is recognized as the direction for deceased people.
Nowadays, some people don’t mind believing these taboos and doing them more practically.
For example, drying clothes inside side out is good for the clothes not to fade in color.
