Buddhist vegetable meal including rice porridge with red beans at Myoshinji Shourinin temple, Kyoto/

There is a belief in Kyoto that you can drive away evil spirits and block all the diseases for the whole year when you eat rice porridge with red beans during post new year’s holiday.

Myosinji Shourinin temple in Kyoto offers rice porridge with red beans from January 15th to 31st every year(I’ll suggest that you make sure of the schedule before visiting it).
You don’t need to book in advance, however it was 3,800 yen in 2021.

Here is the report of that.
First, Japanese confectionery and the hot water with pickled Japanese plum are served in the waiting room.
Each item has different meaning.
For instance, mandarin orange can be called “daidai” in Japanese, which is the homonym of the “generations”.
Thus, mandarin orange symbolizes the prosperity of our descendants.
You will enjoy eating them while waiting for our food being ready.

Next, you are invited to the reception room and served with Buddhist vegetarian meal including rice porridge.
There’s a practice called “Saba” that one offers a little of one’s food for the birds and other small animals in the Buddhist temple’s garden.
It’s a kind of Buddhist teaching that we should appreciate food and live together in nature.

Charity called “Saba”/生飯

Since Buddhist temple has beautiful gardens as well as simple, sophisticated rooms, why don’t you enjoy viewing these while eating food.
