What is Battoudo?
Like Judo and Kyudo, or Japanese archery,  Battoudo is also a part of martial arts characterized by using real swords and slashing rolled straw mats.

The club that I participated is called “Iai-Zanpoukai” 
It belongs to Kagurazaka training hall, West Tokyo Branch, All Japan Battoudo Federation.
The master “Gansei” teaches Battoudou in the Iai-Zanpoukai. 
He learned the fundamental swordsmanship in Mugai school and then shifted to Battoudou.

Mugai school was created by Tsuji Gettan in 1680.
He was a samurai with skillful swordsmanship because he became the master at the age of 26.
During the height of his teaching, he had around 10,000 disciples including feudal lords.
However, for some reasons, Mugai school was ended suddenly.
Fortunately, it was said that Nakagawa Shiryu rejuvenated it in the early 20th century. 

Battoudou has the designated ways of slashing the rolled straw mats including difficult ones that the only skillful trainees with years’ experience are able to perform perfectly. 
One example is when the trainees can recognize that their sword movements are perfect when the slashed rolled straw mat remains in its original position after it has been cut.

Each technique has the name.
And the technique that the master did in the video was “Nukiuchi Kitiage Wazagiri Kawasemi Yokoichimonji“
It consists of three slash techniques.

The first technique is called “Nukiuchi Kitiage”, that one slashes it upward while drawing the sword. 

The second one is called “Wazagiri Kawasemi”, that one slashes it swiftly and splendidly like a kingfisher.
When you look it closely, the master slashed down slantwise from the shoulder and then  slashed back up to the same direction.
Before the slashed rolled straw mat was dropped from the rest part of the rolled straw mat, the master slash it horizontally from right to left.
Actually, this technique requires highly trained skills.

The third one is “Yokoichimonji”, that one slashes it horizontally from left to right.

In general, martial arts in Japan begin and end with bowing.
So, we bow in sequence from the training hall, to master and fellows, and to the sword that we are using.

During the trial lesson, I learned how to draw the sword first.
Next, I learned how to swing the sword. It’s perfect when the sound of the swing can be heard. If one was not able to swing it properly, the sound will not be heard. 
Third, it’s a try out of slashing the rolled straw mats with the real sword.
Actually, the sword that I used so far was the fake one.
I slashed the 4 rolled straw mats with the real sword. 

Thanks to the master’s amazing instruction and a beginner’s luck, I succeeded to slash the first two slashes beautifully. 
I was so happy I felt like being a samurai. 
But later, my opinion was changed.

During the practices, I found that Battoudo is a form of meditation similar to other martial arts.
The condition of my mind will reflect on the posture of my sword swing.
In the end, it results in a failure.
For example, when I tried to slash with strong desire or to make me look good, I failed to slash it.

Probably some muscles had been stressed differently and moved wrongly.
On the other hand, when I tried to make my mind empty and to follow the master’s instruction obediently, I succeeded to slash without any power.  

It’s interesting, isn’t it?
So, I decided to continue practicing Battoudo.

Professional sword fight actors, Mr. Noguchi Hiroki and Mr. Sato Tomoharu, entertained a newcomer by their thrilling and  cool performance.
Mr. Noguchi’s master is Oyama Katsumi, a third generation of masters from Mr. Sawada Shojiro.
He was the founder of samurai stage fighting in Japan.
He got the hint from Kabuki, Japanese traditional stage performance.

I’m very lucky that I was able to watch the authentic stage fighting in person. 

Have you heard of “MOTTAINAI “?

This is a Japanese term and an environmental activist Wangari Muta Maathai who received the Nobel Prize for Peace was deeply impressed by the “MOTTAINAI” spirits and spread it to the world.

MOTTAINAI spirits includes 4R, which means Respect for everyone and everything aside from 3R(reuse, reduce, recyle) idea.

Baddoudo embodies MOTTAINAI spirits in two ways.

You may feel that using the rolled straw mats seems wasteful.
However, it’s not.
The straw mats are the waste because they were used as the surface of tatami mats for decades, replaced and will be just reused for Battoudo training.
So, the owner of the tatami shop will appreciate that he doesn’t need to cut the surface of old tatami mats in smaller pieces before throwing them. It’s like killing two birds with one stone. 

Another example is a kind of training for the advanced-level people.
The master slashed the smaller rolled straw mats that were already slashed before.
The purpose for it is to make them further smaller into a trash.
Slashing the unstable smaller rolled straw mats is very difficult for the beginners because they can’t not control the path of their swords yet. 

I have experienced a few martial arts disciplines, like Kendo or swordsmanship and Kyudo or Japanese archery. I have ShoDan both Kendo and Kyudo.
There are ranking system both Kendo and Kyudo, including 3 Kyus and 8 Dans, 5Kyus and 10 Dans, respectively.
Dans are higher than Kyus.
People are allowed to get Dan after all the Kyus (lower levels) were completed.
Sometimes adults aren’t required to take Kyus. Instead, they can start taking from Sho Dan(first level).
In addition, 5 Dan is already teacher level when it comes to Kyudo.

抜刀道とは何でしょうか。
抜刀道とは、柔道や剣道の様な武道の一種で、真剣を使い畳表を切るという特徴があります。

私が参加したのは、神楽坂に道場のある全日本抜刀連盟西東京支部の居合斬法会です。
居合斬法会では無外流で基礎を修練した後に抜刀道へ転向された師匠が抜刀道を教えています。

無外流は、1680年に辻月丹により創始されました。
辻月丹は、26歳で免許皆伝された優秀な剣士でした。
最盛期には、大名を含め１万人のお弟子さんがおられたそうです。
しかし、何らかの理由で無外流は突然途絶えてしまいました。
幸いにも、二十世紀の初頭に中川士龍が立て直し、中興の祖として知られています。

抜刀道には、技斬り（定められた斬り方）があり、中には何年も修練を積んだ者しか出来ない高度な技もあります。
一例ですが、斬った巻茣蓙がそのまま、そこに留まる時、刀の操作が理想的であったと判断できます。

抜打斬り上げ技斬り翡翠横一文字

これは、抜打斬り上げ、技斬り翡翠、横一文字の３つの技で構成されています。
抜打斬り上げは、文字通り刀を抜いたらそのまま斬りあげる技です。
技斬り翡翠（カワセミ）は、翡翠の様に素早く華麗に斬る連続技です。
よく見ると袈裟に切り、逆袈裟に切り上げ、斬った巻茣蓙が落下しないうちに更に右から左に水平に斬ります。
この技を成功させるには、高度な技術が必要です。
横一文字は、今度は左から右に水平に斬ります。

　一般的に、日本の武道は礼に始まり礼に終わります。
故に、我々は、最初に道場に、次に師匠と一緒にお稽古する先輩方に、最後に使用する刀に礼をします。
体験レッスンでは、刀の抜き方を最初に習いました。
次に、刀の振り方を学びます。振った時に風切り音がしたら、完璧です。
もし、上手く刀を振れないと音はしません。
ここまで使っていた刀は、模造刀です。
最後に、真剣で、巻茣蓙（ござ）を斬ります。
私は、四本の巻畳を斬りました。

師匠の素晴らしいご指導のお陰様、またビギナーズラックのお陰様、一本目の巻茣蓙は、最初のひと太刀、二太刀が綺麗に決まりました。
プチ侍の気分でとても嬉しかったです。

しかし、次第にその考えは変わりました。

練習の間に、抜刀道は、他の武道と同様に、冥想の一つの形なのだと氣づきました。
心の状態が抜刀のフォームに現れるのでしょう。
結果、失敗してしまいます。
つまり、斬ってやろうとか、よく見せようとすれば、失敗します。
多分、筋肉に違った力がかかり、変に動いてしまったのです。
一方、心を無にして、指導された通りに行うと、大して力を必要とすることなく斬れました。

面白いですね。
だから、抜刀道を続けてみようと決めました。

殺陣師の野口尋生さんと佐藤友春さんによる殺陣披露（新人歓迎アトラクション）がありました。
野口さんのお師匠さんは、大山克巳さんで、その三代前のお師匠さんは、殺陣の世界を作り出した澤田正二郎さんです。
澤田さんは、歌舞伎から着想を得て、殺陣を始められたそうです。
本物の殺陣を目の前で見られて、とてもラッキーでした。

「勿体ない」と聞いたことがありますか。
これは日本語で、ノーベル平和賞を受賞された環境活動家のワンがリー・マータイさんがいたく感動され世界に広めて下さった言葉です。

勿体ないは4R、つまりリユース、リドュース、リサイクル、そして他者や全てのものに対するリスペクトを含んでいます。

抜刀道では、２つの方法で勿体無い精神を具現化しています。

巻茣蓙を使うなんて、勿体無いと思われるかもしれませんが、実はこれ、古くなった畳を張り替えた時に出る処分する茣蓙を再利用しています。
畳屋さんも斬ったり分解したり処分する手間が省けて一石二鳥なのです。

別の例としては、上級者向け練習のようなものです。
師匠が、一度斬って小さくなった物を、更に斬っているのは、捨てる為に更に小さくする事が目的ではありますが、小さい巻茣蓙を固定せず斬ることは、刀がどこを通るのか定まっていない初心者には難しいのです。

剣道と弓道を少しやっています。
共に初段を持っています。

剣道と弓道は、級段位制を取っており、それぞれ三級と八段、三級と十段となっています。
段は級よりも上位であり、級を取り終えて、段位を取ることを許されます。
時々、成人は級を取らなくて良い場合もあります。
代わりに、初段から始まります。
弓道の場合五段となれば、先生レベルの技量が備わっています。
