Are you interested in the Japan’s writing systems by any chance?
Or, you may feel Japanese writing systems are complicated.

As you may know, we have three different characters such as Kanji(漢字), Hiragana(ひらがな) and Katakana(カタカナ).
Usually, there are two ways of reading for each Kanji.
In addition, we use both vertical and horizontal writing styles.

The Chinese characters called “kanji” (the characters used in Han dynasty (206B.C.-220A.D.)) were introduced to Japan in the 4th century.
However, Chinese and Japanese language systems are completely different, so we developed in own way over time.
The Japanese first used kanji as phonetic symbols to write Japanese texts.
Later, hira-gana were invented by simplifying the kanji with similar sounds in the 10th century.
Kata-kana were made from a part of the kanji.
Today, kata-kana are mainly used to describe foreign words.
Kanji are pictograms and used for nouns, verb roots and adjective roots.
So, hira-gana are used to supplement kanji.

In the extreme case, we can write all sentences with only hiragana.
Although Japanese has a lot of homonyms, the kanji help us to understand the meaning of the sentences easily and immediately.
Besides, Japanese children learn about 1,000 kanji characters during their elementary school for six years.

Most kanji characters can be read both in the Chinese way known as on-yomi and in the Japanese way known as kun-yomi.
For example, a mountain, we have one kanji “” for the mountain.
However, we have two ways for reading, “yama” in the Japanese way, and “san” in the Chinese way.
So we say Mt.Fuji both Fuji-san and Fuji-yama.

What are vertical and horizontal writing styles?
Like English, Japanese can be written horizontally and read from left to right.
Also, Japanese can be written vertically and read from right to left.
We can use horizontal writing style for English, math, physics, science and so on.
On the other hand, vertical writing style is used for novels, newspapers and mangas.
Sometimes, we use both styles in the same page of the magazine.

If you know the structures of Kanji, you might find it interesting.
The kanji from the picture above “” means a tree in English.
When two of these similar kanji are put next to each other ““, another MEANING is made. In this case, “” means grove in English.
When three of these similar kanji are put together in a triangle “, another meaning is created too; “” means forest in English.

In the same way, one letter “” means the sun in English, while the one with the same three letters “” means bright in English.
Since there are no three suns in the world, each “” mentions the star’s brightness in this case.

Most Japanese have kanji in their name. How about asking the meaning of their name, if you have Japanese friends?
