Believe it or not, there was an amazing story that some Japanese people had believed Christianity for about 250 years without Christian ministers.

For your information, the popular religions in Japan are both Shintoism and Buddhism.
Most of the Japanese people believe both.
Shintoism is animism that we worship nature such as sacred stones, trees and mountains.
Even though we believe some deities inside a grain of rice.

On the other hand, Buddhism is one of the most famous religions in the world.
It came to Japan in 538 or 552 A.D.
Since then, many schools have spread its teaching.

When it comes to Christianity, the current Christians in Japan are only less than one percent of the total population.
Christianity came to Japan in 1549.
At the beginning, it spread quickly and brought the benefit of trade which was welcomed by feudal lords.
However, serious issues which posed a security threat occurred.
For example, these feudal lords donated a part of Japanese land to the Society of Jesus, it became as a fortress, and Japanese people were sold to overseas as slaves.
Hence, the government banned Christianity as the national policy in earnest in 1587.
Since the government still stuck to the trade, the ban was not so strict.
In 1596, when the government heard from Spaniards that Christianity was used as a means of colonization.
Sadly, Jesuit missionaries and Japanese Christian leaders were expelled or executed because of this.
Later in 1615, Anti-Christian Edicts were enacted and Japan’s seclusion policy perfectly executed in 1635 by prohibiting Japanese people travel overseas and allowing several foreign ships to sail only in Nagasaki.

Oura Church is a Catholic church located in Nagasaki and is registered as a World Cultural Heritage Site.
It was built in 1864 for foreign Christians who started living in Nagasaki.
Next year, the secret Japanese followers of Jesus came out of the closet (their beliefs) there.
It was amazing that they had believed Christianity for about 250 years without Christian ministers.

およそ250年間もの間、神父さん無しで、キリスト教を信じてきた日本人の驚くべきお話があります。

因みに、日本では、神道と仏教が二大宗教で、大多数の日本人が両方信じています。
神道は、霊石や神木、霊山などの自然を崇拝する精霊信仰です。
お米の中にも、神様が居ると信じています。

一方、仏教は、世界的に有名な宗教であり、日本には 538 年あるいは 552 年に伝来しました。
それ以来、様々な宗派がその敎えを広めています。

キリスト教に関しては、日本のキリスト教徒は人口の1%未満です。
キリスト教は1549年に伝来しました。
始めはすぐに広まり、大名も貿易から得られる利益を歓迎していました。
しかし、安全保障に関わる重大な問題が発生しました。
例えば、これら大名が日本の土地をイエズス会に寄進し、その土地が要塞化されたり、日本人が奴隷として海外に売られていました。
故に、政府は1587年、伴天連追放令を出し国策としてキリスト教を禁止しました。
ただ依然として、貿易に執着していたので、それほど厳しい取締りではありませんでした。
1596年サン・フェリペ号事件では、スペイン人から、『キリスト教布教は、植民地の手段』と聞きました。
悲しいことに、これを契機にイエズス会の宣教師や日本人のキリスト教徒らは、追放されたり処刑されたりしました。
1615年になると、禁教令が出され、日本人の海外渡航・帰国が禁止され、外国船の寄港が長崎に限定される事によって、1635年鎖国政策が完成しました。

大浦天主堂は、長崎にあるカトリックの教会で、世界遺産でもあります。
1864年長崎に住み始めた外国のキリスト教徒らの為に作られました。
翌年、潜伏キリシタンの信徒らがそこで名乗り出ました。
およそ250年もの間、神父さん無しで信仰を守り続けたなんて素晴らしいですね。
