Rice terraces: Japan’s nostalgic scenes and virgin landscape/棚田:日本の原風景

Western Japan has many rice terraces because of its geographical features. Mountains in western Japan including Kyushu island face the oceans closely. Since our staple food is rice, our ancestors needed to make rice fields in the mountains.
We could easily imagine how long it took them to reclaim these rice terraces.
The definition of a rice terrace is that a rice field is elevated more than one meter every proceeding of 20 meters at most.

According to the data* in 1993, the area of rice terraces are about 221,100 hectares.
It’s only 8 percent of all the rice fields, however, 12 percent of them was not cultivated anymore.
It might become higher eventually due to the super aged society.

You may know the harvest of the rice terraces is about half although the work effort would be twice.
The mechanized farming is difficult to bring to the rice terraces, so many of them are abandoned by farmers.

After the rice terraces across Japan were registered as one of the 100 picturesque spots in Japan in 1999, green tourism has become popular.
People who live in the city visit these to experience traditional style of rice planting.
