Have you heard of snow monkey?
Snow monkeys are Japanese macaque that bathes in hot springs during winter.
These are wild monkeys but we could observe them closely without a fence.

There was a tragic history behind.
There is a wisdom in Japan that we keep certain boundaries called Satoyama between human beings’ residential areas and wild animals’ habitats.
However, people forgot this wisdom and started developing and invading Satoyama in the old days.
So, wild animals like monkeys also started eating vegetables in the farmers’ fields which made the latter started getting rid of the monkeys.
The founder of the Snow Monkey Park felt sorry for the monkeys and established it to preserve the habitat for the wild animals in 1964.
Since then, not only tourists but also researchers visit to meet the monkeys.
Although the staff feed them, the monkeys live their own life in the huge forest.
The park is only a part of their territory.（The tourists are not allowed to feed them.）

Since it’s freezing cold there during winter, the monkeys bathe in hot springs to survive.
On the way to the park, you will see some steam coming from the numerous hot springs spread in the area.

In the case of warmer weather, the monkey might not bathe in hot springs.
However, the park located in the deep forests will give you a chance to enjoy viewing the nature and watching the monkey up close.
You should wear athletic shoes because the mountain road is not paved and may be wet.

Since spring is the season for their newborn babies, if you are lucky you may see them.

It takes about 80 to 110 minutes by bullet train from Tokyo to Nagano.
And then, it takes around another 40 minutes by bus departing from the east exit of Nagano station to the nearest bus stop called “snow monkey park”.
It takes roughly 35-50 minutes from bus stop to the park on foot.

Snow Monkey って聞いたことありますか。
Snow Monkey は冬の間温泉に浸かる日本猿の事で、外国ではそう呼ばれています。
野生の猿ですが、フェンスなしで間近に見られます。

実は悲しいお話があったのです。
日本には、人間の住む所と動物たちの生息地との間に「里山」と呼ばれる境界を設ける知恵があります。
しかし、その昔人々はそれを忘れ、里山の開発を始めたのです。
だから、猿のような野生の動物が、畑などの野菜を食べて荒らすようになり、人々は猿の駆除を始めました。
地獄谷野猿公苑の創始者は猿を気の毒に思い、1964年に野生の動物たちの生息地を守るため、この公苑を設立されました。
それ以来、観光客だけではなく研究者も猿を見に来ています。
職員が餌付けをしていますが、猿は広大な森で自然に暮らしています。
公苑は彼らのテリトリーの一部でしか無いのです（旅行者は餌をあげることは禁止されています）。

冬の間は寒さがとても厳しいので、猿は生活の知恵で温泉に入っています。
公苑へ向かう道からは、温泉から立ち上る湯気が見られ、温泉地帯だと分かります。

暖かい気候の時には、猿が温泉に入らないかもしれません。
しかしながら、深い森の中にある公苑は自然を楽しんだり、猿を間近に見て楽しむ機会を与えてくれるでしょう。
山道は舗装されていませんし、ぬかるんでいるかもしれませんので、運動靴を履いて行くことをお勧めします。

春は、猿の出産時期ですから、運がよければ猿の赤ちゃんが見られるかもしれません。

東京から長野まで、新幹線で80-110分です。
そして、長野駅東口から出る志賀高原行き急行バスに乗り「地獄谷野猿公苑」まで約40分かかります。
そこから徒歩で約35-50分ほどで到着です。
