As you may know, Casablanca is an elegant and gorgeous lily worldwide.
Everyone would agree that it is called the Queen of the Lily.
Casablanca is also the city name in the Kingdom of Morocco and has the meaning of a white house in Spanish.

By the way, do you know the origin of Lilly Casablanca?
This Brilliant Lily is the original species used to develop varieties of lilies.
You can see the commonality between Brilliant Lily and Casablanca, like downward flowering and having uniquely shaped petals.

According to the language of flowers, Brillian Lily means dignity, charitableness and never-fading gorgeousness.
The peak season of the flowers is from July to the early August.
It grows in the wild in Kyushu, Southern part of Japan.
It’s designated as an endangered species.

Brilliant Lily is known as one of the first Japanese lilies introduced to Europe by German doctor, Seybold, around the early 19th century.
Since then, Japanese lilies had became popular for ornamental purposes in Europe and the United States.
Lilies in Japan were considered as food around that time, though.
Hence, a lot of lily bulbs were exported to mainly United Kingdom and United States of America.
These were used for the decorations of Easter and Christmas.
According to the data relating to the exportation, the annual sales lily bulbs in 1908 reached about 450,000 yen.
Since one yen around that time is said to have the same value of 20,000 yen with the current rate, it would be equivalent to roughly 9 billion yen.
What a huge amount, wan’t it?

Lastly, a Japanese term of Brilliant Lily is “Kanoko-Yuri”, which literally means lily of a baby deer.
It is named after the pattern of the petals which looks similar to that of the back of a baby deer.

日本では、その当時、百合は食用と考えられていました。
ですから、沢山の百合根が主にイギリスやアメリカ合衆国に輸出されており、イースターやクリスマスの飾りとして使われていました。
輸出に関するデータによると、1908年の年間百合根売上高は、四十五万円に達していました。
当時の壱円が現在の弐万円と同じ価値ですから、およそ九十億円となるでしょう。
とっても大きな金額ですね。

最後に、カノコユリの日本語は、文字通り訳すと、「鹿の子百合」という意味となります。
赤ちゃん鹿の背中の模様に花弁が似ている事に因んでいます。
