Have you remembered Onigawara?
It’s Ogre’s face-shaped tiles which can be seen as the decoration of ridge-end tiles.
In Kyoto, the statues of Shoki-san are standing on the roofs.
Why did this practice start?
In the old days, a pharmacy was newly built with Onigawara on its roof.
Soon after, a woman who lived in front of the pharmacy suffered from an unknown disease.
The reason was found that evil sprits, which were reflected by Onigawara, entered the house across the street.
Hence, the woman decided to put the statue of Shoki-san which is known as stronger than Oni or Ogre in order to drive away evil spirits.
Strangely enough, the woman’s disease was gone after that.
Since then, people in Kyoto started this practice.
By the way, where did Shoki-san come from?
According to the only manufacturing company of Shoki in Kyoto, the sixth emperor Xuanzong from the Tang dynasty was lying on the bed due to a disease.
A ogre appeared in his dream, then it tries to steal his elaborate flute.
Just before the ogre’s hand reached to touch his body, a big man with a beard appeared and killed the ogre.
The man identified himself as Shoki.
Surprisingly, when the emperor woke up, his disease also had gone.
That’s why Shoki has known as the person who is stronger than an ogre.
When you visit Kyoto, how about looking up at the statues of Shoki-san on the roofs?

鬼瓦を覚えていますか。
鬼の顔の形をした棟の端に取り付けられた瓦の装飾です。
京都では、屋根の上に鍾馗さんの像が立っています。
なぜこの習慣が始まったのでしょうか。
昔、薬屋さんが新しく鬼瓦を乗せたお店を建てました。
程なくして、向かいに住む女性が原因不明の病で寝込んでしまいました。
原因は、鬼瓦に反射した悪霊が向かいの家に入ったと分かりました。
そこで、女性は悪霊を祓うために、鬼よりも強いと知られている鍾馗さんの像を置く事に決めました。
すると、不思議なことに女性の病気は治ったそうです。それ以来、京都ではこの習慣が始まったそうです。
ところで、鍾馗さんはどこから来たのでしょうか。
唐の時代の第六代皇帝玄帝が、病気で伏せていました。
夢に鬼が現れ、皇帝の玉笛を盗もうとしました。
鬼の手が皇帝にかかろうとしたとき、突然髭を蓄えた大きな男が現れて鬼を退治しました。
男は、鍾馗と名乗りました。
驚くべきことに、皇帝が目覚めると、病気は回復していました。
ですから、鍾馗さんは鬼よりも強いと知られています。
京都に訪れるときには、屋根にいる鍾馗さんの像を見上げてみてはいかがでしょうか。
