All seafoods served in the Sushi restaurants are fresh.

Sometimes the chefs peel the shells of raw shrimps in front of the customers.
Do you think Japanese people are cruel because shrimps are skinned alive?

We understand there are pros and cons.

However, this serving style proves the ingredients are fresh enough.
Also, we know they go bad fast.

To tell you the truth, I could not eat it and tried to release it to the sea in my childhood.
But now I am able to eat it as long as someone removes the shells for me.

There are some Japanese people who can’t watch it because they think the shrimps are in pain.

We hope you understand this Japanese practice through these articles about the way of showing appreciation for the living creatures.

Brief extract taken from the previous article The spirits of shrimps and tea whisks are consoled.

Other examples are food such as shrimps, eggs and sushi.
As you may know, Japanese people say “Itadakimasu” before we eat meals. It means that we are grateful for all the people who contributed to making the dishes and the ingredients sacrificed; especially for the lives of the shrimps, eggs, and fishes given in order for us human beings to live.

Like the same way we do when the people passed away, we do a ceremony to console their souls by reciting the sutra and offering food.

Would you like to try eating raw shrimps or would you rather pass?

I a not really a fan of raw fish that’s why I rarely eat sashimi and sushi, but this sounds interesting. I think I will give it a try.
