Long long ago, there were an aged couple without a child.
An elderly man made bamboo baskets for a living.
One day, he went to a bamboo forest and found a stem of a bamboo shining.
When he cut it, he found a tiny baby girl whose size is 9 centimeters.
He brought her back to his home and decided to grow her with his wife.
They appreciated a deity to have the girl.
Next day, when he went to the bamboo forest, he found a stem of a bamboo shining again.
When he cut it, he got gold. The same thing happened again the next day, and the next, and the next.
And soon, the man’s family became rich.
Three months later, the girl grew up as a beautiful woman, and received the name Kaguya.
Word about her beauty spread across the country quickly.
Although every men wanted to marry her and some walked around her house just to see her, she refused all marriage proposal including an emperor.
The emperor dispatched a subordinate many times to ask sincerely Princess Kaguya to meet the emperor.
Since Kaguya kept rejecting the emperor’s requests, he asked Kaguya’s father to let him meet Kaguya, in return for a higher civil service post.
However, Kaguya’s father could not change his daughter’s determined mind.
Finally, the emperor pretended to go hunting and her father let the emperor see her without asking.
As soon as the emperor saw her, he was fascinated by her beauty and felt in love with her.
He tried to bring her back to the palace, but she turned into the light instantly.
Actually, there were many beautiful women around him.
But they turned out just regular women for him after he saw Kaguya.
He was absolutely charmed by Kaguya’s beauty, so he spent all day thinking about her and writing letters to her.
Three months later after the emperor and Kaguya started exchanging letters, Kaguya lost in her own thoughts while looking at the moon.
As the full moon in August approached, she came to cry.
Finally she confessed her identity to her father.
She came from the moon and must return to the moon on August 15th.
On that day, the emperor dispatched many strong warriors to Kaguya’s house.
On the other hand, they were powerless in front of the people from the moon.
Kaguya went back to the moon after she wrote a letter to the emperor and left it with elixir of life.
The emperor read it, grieved for her absence on the earth, lost his appetite and finally, he forgot how to be happy again.
One day, he asked his subordinates where the highest mountain in Japan is.
Since Kaguya was not beside him, elixir of life is worthless for him.
He ordered to dispatch many warriors to Mt.Fuji and to burn elixir of life so that the smoke would reach to the moon.
