Thanks to Japan’s myth from “Kojiki” or a Record of Ancient Matters, we could understand how Japan’s land made and how the Imperial Family started.
Kojiki was compiled in 712 A.D.

First of all, there were three different worlds that were “Takamanohara” where the deities live, “Yomino-kuni” or the afterworld, and “Ashiharano-Nakatsu-kuni” that was located between them.  Ashiharano-nakatsu-kuni implies Japan or the real world.

It was said that the five deities who featured no genders, called “Kotoamatu”,  appeared at the beginning.
And then, two deities and 5 couple deities who were called “Kaminoyo-nanayo” appeared.

The last pair were Izanaki and Izanami

How was Japan’s land made?

They started making lands by using a special pike.
When they stirred the chaotic ocean with the pike, the first island “Onokoro” was made from the droplets from the pike.
They moved to the island and mated to make two islands.
However, they failed because the female deity took the initiative.
On the next attempt, the male god took the initiative and succeeded in making 8 islands including Honshu and Kyushu.
Later, they made 6 additional islands.

As a trivia, the first island that they made was Awaji island located near Osaka.

The root of Amaterasu, the Japanese Goddess of the Sun

After they finished creating the islands, they started creating deities.
First, they made 17 deities that included 6 deities who protected houses and 11 deities who were related to nature such as wind, trees, grasses, sea and fire.
When Izanami gave birth to the deity of fire, she got burnt and passed away.
Izanaki killed their baby because he got angry.
Interestingly, some deities were produced from his tears and the baby’s blood.

Anyway, he went to the afterworld to meet with his wife.
He told to her “why don’t you come with me so we can finish making the nation? ”
She replied,  “I can’t go with you because I had already eaten some food in the afterworld.
However, I’ll discuss it with the deities of the afterworld, so would you wait for a while?
Please don’t look at me”.

It’s a natural feeling for people to desire something forbidden.

As you expected, he looked and saw her ugly body which had many worms and the 8 thunder deities that looked like snakes.
He felt scared and ran away from her.
She chased him, however he put a huge rock between them to block her.
Their relationship was over.
She said that she would kill one thousand people everyday.
On the other hand, he said that he would create 1,500 people every day.
Since then, human beings became mortal.
It’s interesting isn’t it?

After he returned to this world, he purified himself.
When he removed his clothing, 12 deities were produced.
When he soaked himself in a river, another 11 deities were created.

When he washed his right eye, the goddess of the sun called “Amaterasu” was made.
On the other hand, the god of moon “Tsukuyomi” was made when he washed his left eye. Finally, the god of storm “Susanoo” was born by washing his nose.

We know how the Japanese Goddess of the Sun, Amaterasu, was born now.
We’ll talk about the root of the first Emperor Jinmu next.
We hope you’ll be looking forward to it.
