Mt. Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan. 
The height is 3,776 meters from the sea level (roughly over 12,000 feet). 
Although it’s categorized as an active volcano, the last eruption was in 1707. 
It’s famous for the perfect beautiful cone shape. 

Mt.Fuji is regarded as a sacred mountain because the Japanese worship it for a long time. 
Old people believed the Kami or deities lived at the top of the mountain.
Actually, there are shrines at the top.

Mt. Fuji is also a favorite among the hikers. 
During summer, the mountain is open from the mid July to the early September. 
There are four routes. 
Furthermore,  you can reach half way of the mountain by bus. 
From the middle to the top, it takes about 6 hours to 8 hours depending on the route and the hikers’ ability to climb.
Many people climb it to see the sunrise at the top of the mountain. 
Viewing the sunrise is really beautiful and amazing. 

Aside from that, you can stroll around the crater and send letters or postcards at the top. 
If the clouds are floating halfway up the mountain, around the top seems to be separated from the town because the lower part of the mountains is no longer visible. 
It’s also beautiful and mystic like heaven. 
That’s why, if you have a chance, we’ll recommend seeing or climbing Mt.Fuji as a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

What kind of animals live in the forest of Mt. Fuji?
There are more than 120 species of butterflies, 100 species of wild birds, 10 different kinds of bats, Japanese serows, Japanese minks, flying squirrels, wild boars, Japanese raccoon, foxes, mice, mole, Asian black bear and so on, however there is no tigers there.

Mt. Fuji has an iconic beauty that attracts a lot of tourists.
Have you ever seen the photos of Mt. Fuji with snow on the top?
Isn’t it odd or bizarre that snow exists on the top?
Actually, snow also falls on the ground of Mt. Fuji during winter. 
On most of the days during winter, the road which has access to the fifth station of Mt. Fuji is closed due to heavy snow.

Going back to the photos, why aren’t we able to see the snow on the ground?
It’s because the trees cover the snow, while there are no trees above the fifth station of Mt. Fuji. 
We called it forest limit.

If you get off the bus at the fifth station, we’ll suggest that you observe the trees around you, especially Japanese Larch trees which look like pine trees. 
You may find that the branches of these trees are facing only towards one direction, downwind of blizzard. 
We can see various trees depending on its height. 

Above the fifth station which means above roughly 2,500 meters, the alpine zone spreads . 
The land there is gravelly or stony, shivery and barren or infertile. 
Hence, the tall trees can not survive for long, while alpine plants bloom during short summer.

From the fifth station to the second station which is around 1,600 meters, the subalpine zone where evergreen coniferous trees grow spreads.
In the coniferous forests, cedar trees usually grow up straight.
The shape of the leaves are thin and long like needles and moreover, the trees have very sharp tips. 
Evergreen trees, as its name suggests, always have green leaves which do not fall even in winter.

From 1,600 to 900 meters, there is the mountain zone where deciduous broad-leaved trees like Japanese Beeches propagate. 
The deciduous trees usually make their leaves change color in autumn and fall in winter. 
The soil becomes richer and fertile in the deciduous forest.
Furthermore, they bear nuts in autumn, which serve as food for small animals.

Below 900 meters, there is the plain field zone where evergreen broad-leaved trees exists. 
They also produce a lot of nuts.

ご来光は、とても美しく、素晴らしいです。

それ以外には、お鉢巡りや、頂上で、手紙や葉書を出すこともできます。
もし雲が中腹にあるようであれば、頂上は、下界からもう見る事ができませんから、街から切り離されたように見えます。
それも、えもいわれぬ美しさで、神秘的です。
ですから、もし機会があれば、一生に一度の体験として、富士山に登ったり見たりすることをお勧めします。

どのような動物が富士山の樹海に住んでいるのでしょうか。
１２０種以上の蝶や１００種類以上の野鳥、１０種のコウモリ、日本カモシカ、イタチ、ムササビ、イノシシ、タヌキ、キツネ、ネズミ、モグラ、ツキノワグマなどがいますが、虎はいません。

富士山の頂上に雪が積もっている写真を見た事がありますか。
頂上にだけ雪があるのは奇妙ではありませんか。
実際に、雪は、冬の間富士山の麓にも降ります。
冬の間のほとんどの日には、富士山の五合目に通じる道路は、ひどい雪の為に通行止めになります。

写真に戻りますと、何故富士山の麓の雪は見えないのでしょうか。
木々が雪を覆っている（白く見えない）のですが、五合目より上は、木がないから雪が白く見えます。
森林限界と呼びます。

もし五合目でバスを降りたなら、周りの木々、特に、カラマツを観察してみて下さい。
ブリザードの風下である、一方向に向かってのみ、木々の枝が伸びている事に気づくでしょう。
標高によって、さまざまな木々を見ることができます。

五合目より上、つまり、およそ２,５００メートル より上である所は、高山植物帯が広がっています。
そこは、砂利が多く、凍えるように寒く、不毛の土地です。
故に、高い木々は長く生きられず、高山植物が短い夏を謳歌します。

五合目から二合目（およそ１,６００メートルまで）は、常緑針葉樹が生い茂る亜高山帯が広がります。
針葉樹林では、普通、杉が育ちます。
葉の形は、針のように細くて長く、更には、木々の先端はとても鋭いです。
常緑樹は、その名の通り、冬でも落ちない緑の葉を常につけています。

９００メートルから１,６００メートル になると、ブナの様な落葉広葉樹が繁殖する山地帯になります。
落葉樹は、たいてい秋になると紅葉し、冬になると葉を落とします。
土壌が豊かになり、落葉樹林を肥沃にします。
その上、秋には、小動物の餌となる木の実をつけます。

９００メートル以下になると、常緑広葉樹が広がる平地帯となります。
沢山の木の実が採れます。
