Typical Japanese-style houses and temples have tiled roofs.
And Onigawara (Ogre’s face-shaped tiles) can be seen as the decoration of ridge-end tiles.
When Buddhism came to Japan, the technique of tiled roofs was also imported for the buildings of the temples.

The first tiles were installed at the Asuka temple in 588 A.D.
Since then, it was developed a lot.
When it comes to the ridge-end tiles, its function was to prevent rainwater from coming into the building and decaying the timbers.
Hence, the designs don’t matter.

At the beginning, the designs of the ridge-end tiles were simple symmetric and geometric patterns.
Later, Onigawara (Ogre’s face-shaped tiles) appeared in order to drive away evil spirits.
This intricate design has become popular since then.

Talking about Onigawara at Yumedono (Hall of Dreams) in Horyuiji temple, you can compare the two Onigawaras made in different periods (See the photo below).
One was the original one dated back to 739 A.D. when Yumedono was built, while the other was built later in 1230 during the repair period.
You will see the original one has a milder and more gentle face than the latter.

The other examples have the designs of family crests especially in the castle(See the photo below).

日本家屋や寺院は、瓦葺きが一般的です。
そして、鬼瓦が棟端飾瓦（棟の端に取り付けられた装飾を伴う瓦）としてみられます。
仏教が日本に伝来したときに、瓦葺きの技術も寺院の建物に取り入れられました。

初めての瓦は、西暦588年にできた飛鳥寺に用いられました。
それ以来、瓦は発展してゆきました。
棟端飾瓦の機能は、雨水が建物に入ることを防ぎ、柱が腐ることを防ぐ事です。
ですから、正直デザインは何でも良いのです。

最初、棟端飾瓦の模様は単純で対称的な幾何学模様でした。
その後、悪霊を祓う意味も込めた鬼瓦が現れました。
この手の込んだデザインが、それ以来主流となっています。

法隆寺夢殿では、異なった２つの時代に作られた鬼瓦を比べることができます。
１つは、創建当時の西暦739年に作られた元祖鬼瓦で、一方は1230年鎌倉時代の大修理の時に作られたものです。
元祖鬼瓦は、後者よりも穏やかで優しいお顔をしていることが分かるでしょう。
他の例としては、特にお城で、家紋が模様として使われています。

日本に来たら、鬼瓦の顔を比べたり自分好みの鬼瓦を見つけてみるのはいかがでしょうか。
