Miniature Hina dolls/豆雛

Therefore, we are able to see a lot of hina dolls all across Japan including various types of dolls such as authentic ones, earthenware ones, and glass ones.
Since both basic information and the history of Dolls festival were mentioned in the former articles, let’s see the details of Hina dolls here.

Typical displays consist of the emperor, the empress, three court ladies, five court musicians, ministers of the left and the right, and three valets from the top.
These dolls represent a noble’s wedding during Heian period ranging from 9th to 12th centuries.

Around that time, the empress wore twelve layered kimono as formal attire, so the doll wears the same attire.
Today, the female royal family members still wear twelve layered kimono during the special occasion of Ceremony of  Accession and royal wedding.

Speaking of three court ladies, they used to serve the emperor and empress by supporting their missions and personal care. 
Therefore, they hold the sake cups, a sake pot, a sake ladle, respectively to serve for the wedding ceremony of the emperor and empress.  
We have a special ceremony in the Shinto style wedding called “San-San-Kudo”, which literally means “three-three nine times”. 
The bride and the groom take three sips of sake using three different sizes of cups in front of the Shinto altar.
Interestingly, the court lady in the middle shaves her eyebrows and makes her teeth black. 
It symbolizes she got married.

Speaking of the five court musicians, they were a boy band including a vocalist, a bamboo flute player and three drummers using three different drums.

These dolls are displayed like a wide staircase.
For example, the emperor and empress are on the top. 
And then, three court ladies are put on the lower level.
And the five musicians are on the next lower level.

On the fourth level are the ministers of the left and the right.
They are body guards. 
Therefore , they each hold a bow and arrows as well as a sword. 
The minister of the left is older and higher ranked than that of the right.
It’s said that the minister of the left represents wisdom, while the minister of the right represents power.

On the fifth layer from the top are three valets with three different facial expressions such as smile, crying and anger. 
Their jobs might be tough but fun. 
It’s also said to describe our daily lives.
They hold shoes and their stand, umbrella and sunshade, respectively.

There are some miniature Hina dolls so that people who live in apartments or places with limited spaces could also enjoy displaying them.

ですから、本格的な雛人形や陶器やガラスでできた雛人形など様々な、沢山の雛人形を日本中で見ることができます。
ひな祭りの基本的な情報や歴史については以前の記事で紹介しましたので、今回は雛人形についてみてみましょう。

典型的な雛人形は、上段から、お内裏さま、お姫さま、三人官女、五人囃子、左大臣と右大臣（随身ずいしん）、仕丁で構成されています。
雛人形は、平安時代の貴族の結婚を表しています。

当時、皇后陛下は、十二単が正装でしたので、お姫様の人形も十二単を着ています。
今日では、女性皇族の方々は、即位の礼や婚礼の特別な行事の折には十二単をお召しになります。

三人官女について、宮中で職務のサポートや身の回りのお世話をして天皇陛下と皇后陛下にお仕えする女官でした。
お内裏さまとお姫さまの結婚の儀にお仕えするため、三方さんぽう（盃を乗せる台）、長柄銚子ながえちょうし（三方の盃にお酒を注ぐ）、提子ひさげ（お酒を長柄銚子に移す）を持っています。
神道の結婚式では、三々九度と呼ばれる特別な儀式があります。
神前で、新郎と新婦が、それぞれ大中小三つの大きさの違う盃からお酒をそれぞれ三回で飲み干します。
興味深いことに、中央の女官は、眉を剃りお歯黒をしています。
既婚者である印です。

五人囃子について、謡うたいと笛、三種類の太鼓（太鼓たいこ、大鼓おおつづみ、小鼓こつづみ）で構成された少年楽団でした。

これらの人形は、階段状に飾られます。
例えば、お内裏さま、お姫さまが、一番上で、三人官女がその下。
五人囃子が五人囃子が更にその下の段となります。

四段目は、左大臣と右大臣です。
彼らは、警護を司どっています。
ですから、弓と矢、剣を持っています。
左大臣は、右大臣より歳が上で位も高いです。
左大臣は知恵を、右大臣は力を象徴していると言われています。

五段目は、仕丁しちょうと呼ばれる泣き上戸、笑い上戸、怒り上戸の三種類の表情をした従者です。
彼らの仕事は大変だけれど、楽しいのかもしれません。
日々の生活を表しているとも言われています。
彼らは、沓台くつだい（靴置き）、立傘たちがさ（雨傘）、台笠だいがさ（日傘）をそれぞれ持っています。

アパートや限られた空間でも雛人形を飾って楽しめるように豆雛もあります。
