What’s a Goshuin?/御朱印ってなあに。

Goshuin is a stamp as a token for visiting and offering prayers at the shrines and temples becoming popular recently.
In addition, Goshuin-cho is a stamp book that you can collect and keep these Goshuins.

In the past, Goshuin was given as a proof of offering by copying Buddhist sutras wishing for the desire to come true.
This is still followed and practiced by temple and shrine goers until now.
That’s why some temples may require offering copying a few lines of Buddhist sutras before giving a Goshuin.
Don’t be afraid of it.
A few lines of Buddhist sutras are written with faint ink, so all you have to do is to overlay darker ink on it.
I hope that It’s not so difficult for foreign people even though these sutras are written in Kanji.

Each Goshuin is considered as a deity or a Buddha, so we should keep them with the most respect.
We have a practice to put Goshuin-cho into a loved one’s coffin so that he or she could go to another world with the protection of deities and Buddhas.

Generally, Goshuin has the visiting date, the name of shrines, temple, deity, or Buddha and some significant red stamps.
There are also a variety of Goshuins including embroidered ones, paper cutout ones, large size’s ones and so on.
Some Goshuin-cho have a beautiful design, others have a simple and plain color.

Gushuins collecting from the temples and the ones from shrines should be separated, otherwise they may refuse writing them.
That’s a kind of manner of Goshuin.
It’s up to you whether you collect Goshuin on both side of the sheets.

Goshuin-cho is sold at shrines and temples, so you can buy it together with Goshuin as a start.
Gushuins are written by the Shinto priests or Buddhist monks in front of you.
However, some shrines or temples tend to offer the Goshuin written in advance after the pandemic.

亡くなった方が神様や仏様のお導きにより極楽往生できるようにと、御朱印帳をお棺に入れる習慣があります。

一般に、御朱印には、参拝日、神社仏閣名、若しくは御祭神の名前が書かれ、特徴のある朱の印が押されています。
刺繍や切り絵の御朱印、複数ページにわたる御朱印など多様な御朱印があります。
御朱印帳は、美しいデザインの物のあれば、素朴で単色な物もあり様々です。

お寺で頂く御朱印と、神社で頂く御朱印は、分けるべきです。
そうしないと、神社仏閣で御朱印を断られるかも知れません。
御朱印の礼儀作法の様なものです。
御朱印帳の両面を使うかについては、個人の自由です。

御朱印帳は、神社仏閣で販売されていますので、最初の御朱印を頂くときに一緒に買い求めることができます。
御朱印は神官や僧侶が目の前でかいてくださいます。
しかしながら、コロナ騒動の後、神社仏閣によっては、前もって紙に書いた御朱印を頂くようになっています。

日本を旅行中に、神社仏閣に立ち寄るかも知れません。
