When do you ask permission from the god, deities or Kami?

Japanese people ask for permission from the Kami when the beaches and mountains are opened in summer.
The Shinto ceremony is held by a Shinto priest.

A simple altar with food offering is set on site.
Aside from water, salt, rice and sake (rice wine), food harvested from oceans, mountains and grounds are offered.

For example, whole red sea bream is a common item as sea food because it’s auspicious. The local fish will be a replacement.
Dried brown seaweed, kelp and squid are also common sea food.
Mushrooms and fruits harvested from the mountains are prepared.
Tomatoes, eggplants cucumbers and so on represent food growing above the ground.
Carrots, radishes and potatoes represent food growing under the ground.
These food harvested from the ground are also offered.
The kind of food offered depends on the local area.

A Shinto priest chants Shinto prayers called “Norito” and prays for the safety during the period when the mountains and oceans are opened.

Why do Japanese do that?

We have worshiped the nature such as the mountains, rocks, trees and so on (animism) since the old days.
We were afraid of the eruption of the volcanos.
We believe that the eruption is the expression of anger of the Kami (the deities of the mountains).

In the old days, people didn’t climb the sacred mountains.
Later in the Heian period (the 8th and 12th centuries), Shugendou or mountain asceticism started.
Buddhist monks enter the sacred mountains and train hard to achieve their enlightenment.
The sacred mountains are opened for a certain period.
They have a ceremony before they enter the mountains.
It’s the origin of today’s “Umibiraki and Yamabiraki “or to ask Kami’s permission to enter the mountains and oceans.

How do you feel if a stranger entered your house without your permission and feel at home there.
Definitely, you would feel bad, wouldn’t you?
That’s why we have a ceremony to ask the owners (Kami or deities of the mountains and oceans)to enter their properties when the summer season starts and the mountains and beaches are opened.

FYI, aside from the mountains and oceans, we need to ask the permission from Kami (the deities) of the ground.
It will happen when the ground has been damaged such as constructing houses, buildings, bridges, tunnels and so on.
We do this ceremony before the groundbreaking ceremony.
The groundbreaking ceremony is a bit different that we ask permission from Kami (the deities) of craftsmanship.

Actually, the Shinto priest pours rice wine to the ground to offer it to the Kami and purify the place.
So does to the ocean and mountains.

山の幸としては、きのこや果物です。
トマトや、茄子、きゅうりなど、地上で採れた野菜と、人参や、大根、芋など地下で採れた野菜を準備します。
これらのお供えは、地域性があるため、他のものに代わることもあります。

神主さんが祝詞を奏上し、期間中の安全を祈願します。

なぜ我々はこんなことをするのでしょうか。

昔から海の神、山の神が住んでいると信じてきました。
山や、岩、木々などの自然を神聖なものとして崇拝してきました（精霊信仰）。
噴火を神の怒りとして恐れていました。

昔は、霊山には登りませんでした。
平安時代になると、修験道が始まりました。
悟りを得ようと、ある一定期間だけ入山を許された霊山で僧侶たちが、修行を行います。
霊山に入る前に、儀式があります。
これが、今日の海開きや山開きの起源です。

もし、見知らぬ人が貴方の許可なく家に入って寛いでいたらどう思いますか。
気分悪いこと間違いないでしょう。
だから、夏が始まって、海や山に入る前には、そこに住んでおられる神様に許可を求める儀式（海開き・山開き）があるのです。

おまけ、海と山以外にも、土に鍬を入れる時（建物や橋トンネルなどの構造物を建てる時）には、大地の神様（大地主神-おおとこぬしのかみ）の許可をいただく必要があります。
この儀式（地鎮祭）は、起工式の前に行います。
起工式は、工匠の神様に許可を求める点で異なります。
神主さんは、実際にお酒を地面に注ぎます。
同様に海や山にも注ぎ、神様にお供えし場を清めます。
