A vending machine selling broth in Kyoto/

People who have come to Japan even once might be aware of vending machines everywhere, like on the streets, in the temples, in hotels, and so on(see the photo below).

Can you guess how many vending machines are there only for beverages in Japan?

There are around 2,280,000 as of December 2020.
Japan has roughly one vending machine every 55 people.
It’s too much, isn’t it?
If all the other vending machines, such as for cigarettes, train tickets and snacks … are counted, it is about 4 million in total.

In the unique cases, flowers, Udon noodles and raw chicken eggs are sold at the vending machines.
It means the vending machines can also do simple cooking as well as control the temperature.

In Akihabara, a famous district for selling electric products, you will be able to find a canned meal called Oden.
Oden is a dish that is made out of radish, devil’s tongue, fish paste cake and other ingredients.
These are simmered in a soy sauce flavored soup.
It’s theperfect food in winter.

The most surprising and weirdest vending machine that I’ve ever seen in my life is the one selling broth in Kyoto.
The broth is made by soaking whole dried fish or bonito flakes into the water.
Hence, you may see some whole dried fish inside the plastic bottles.
People in Kyoto seem to like using the traditional broth for cooking, even though the powder form of broth is popular and convenient nowadays.

We hope this culture has been preserved well since the broth is essential for authentic Japanese cuisine.
Although making authentic broth takes time and effort, it is worth it.

Be careful not to drink broth when you encounter this vending machine because it’s not for drinking but for cooking.
It gives your dishes more flavor.
The taste of the broth is unique.
Would you try some to fulfill your curiosity instead?

If the ingredients for Oden are soaked in soy sauce, won’t it be too salty?

Thank you for your comment, Stella san. 🙂
I’d go along with that if it happened.
But, these are in soy sauce flavour soup, not in soy sauce directly.
I apologize to make you confused.
