Superstition no.2-Broken mirror…/迷信2: 鏡が割れると…。

This is the second in the superstition series.
According to the western superstition, it’s said that the broken mirror causes 7 years bad luck.
However, Japanese people hardly know this superstition. Instead, there is the superstition related to a comb: don’t give a comb to others as a gift because it will cause trouble whether the recipient has long hair or is bald.

Let’s see the story behind it.
Essentially, the comb is recognized as a sacred item and has the power of expelling the evil spirits.
According to a Record of Ancient Matters, “Kojiki”, the comb named “yutsutsumakushi” helped save Izanaki’s life twice.

Do you remember the story that Izanaki went to another world to meet his wife, izanami and he looked and saw her ugly body which had many worms and the 8 thunder deities that looked like snakes?
Actually, the room was dark when he entered to see her. Hence, he broke a part of the comb and lit it to see her.
And then, what happened in detail was that she ordered a female ogre to chase him and she also followed them.
While Izanaki run away from the ogre, he threw the comb.
Suddenly, bamboo sprouts grew from the place where the comb landed.
Luckily, Izanaki could escape from the ogre while she was eating them.
That’s why the comb is considered as a sacred and mysterious item.

The Japanese term for the comb is kushi.
“Ku” evokes suffering and troubles.
“Shi” is associated with death.
That’s why we should not give something with negative images to others.
I’m not sure that it’s true, but my mother advised me that we should buy a comb when we feel fully energized enough to address its suffering and death.
She added we should not buy a comb when we are sick.

迷信シリーズの第二弾です。
西洋の迷信では、『鏡が壊れると七年の不幸を引き起こす』と言われています。
しかし、日本人でこの迷信を知っている人は稀です。
その代わり、櫛にまつわる迷信があります。
『貰った人（髪の有無に関わらず）に災難が降り掛かるので、櫛を贈り物として贈ってはいけない。』

背景を見てみましょう。
本来、櫛は神聖な物で、邪氣を払う力があるとされています。
古事記によれば、湯津津間櫛ゆつつまくしと呼ばれる神聖な櫛が伊耶那岐神の命を２回も助けました。

伊邪那岐神いざなきのかみが黄泉の国に妻である伊耶那美神いざなみのかみに逢いに行ったら、蛆うじがたかり、蛇のような八つの雷神がまとわりついた醜い伊耶那美神の姿を見てしまった神話を覚えていますか。
実際、伊耶那岐神が伊耶那美神に逢いに部屋に入ると、暗かったのです。
そこで、伊耶那岐神は櫛の男柱おとこばしら（両端の大きな歯）を折って、それに火を灯して伊耶那美神を見ました。
その後の様子をもう少し詳細に説明すると、伊耶那美神が醜女しこめに命じて伊耶那岐神を追わせ、自分も追ったのです。
伊耶那岐神が醜女から逃げている時に、櫛を投げました。
突然、櫛が落ちた所から筍が生えました。
醜女が筍を食べている間に、伊耶那岐神は逃げる事ができました。そのため、櫛は神聖で不思議な物だと考えられています。

日本語で櫛は、苦しみや災いを連想させる『苦』と『死』を連想させます。
ですから、余り人に差し上げる贈り物に相応しくありません。
正しいか分かりませんが、母が「苦しみや死を吹き飛ばす位十分に氣力がみなぎっている時に櫛は買いなさい。病気の時には櫛は買わないように」と助言してくれました。
もっともだと思われますか。
