Spring has come according to the 24 Solar Terms, even though it is still cold in Japan.
Twenty-four solar terms is a calendar that represents the seasons, with the yearly movement of the sun along the ecliptic divided into 24 equal parts and named for every 15 degrees.

Setsubun is reralated to the twenty-four solarterms.

Although there are many species of flowers in Japan as flowers of the spring, many people will agree that the beginning of the flowers is Plum blossoms.
It is said that there are 300 different species including for both viewing and eating.

Let’s introduce the famous Waka poem of an aristocrat, Sugawara Michizane!
Waka poem implies a kind of traditional Japanese poem consists of five, seven, five, seven and seven syllables, totally 31 syllables.

5: Ko・Chi・Fu・Ka・Ba　
7: Ni・Ho・I・O・Ko・Se・Yo
5: U・Me・No・Ha・Na
7: A・Ru・Ji・Na・Si・To・Te
7: Ha・Ru・Na・Wa・Su・Re・So.

Michizane’s political opponent, Fujiwara Tokihira, framed him as a plotting and kicked him out and then relegated him to Dazaifu, which was located 650 kilometers far from Kyoto.
This poem was recited by Michizane at that time.

The meaning of the Waka poem is …..

When the east wind blows, please send your scent to Dazaifu, my Japanese plum blossoms.
Don’t forget the spring even if I’m not here anymore.

You may imagine his feelings well.

Believe it or not, the Japanese plum blossom tree was said to have flown all the way to Dazaifu overnight to follow Michizane.
This is the one planted in the grounds of Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine.

梅にまつわる菅原道真公の有名な和歌を紹介しましょう。

和歌とは、五・七・五・七・七の卅一文字で構成される日本の歌です。

『東風吹かば　にほひおこせよ　梅の花　あるじなしとて　春な忘れそ』

道真公は、時の権力者藤原時平の謀により、罪をきせられ、京の都から太宰府（650km南西）に左遷されました。その時に、詠んだ歌です。

東風が吹いたなら、匂いを届けておくれ、梅の花よ。
私がいなくても、春を忘れないでおくれ。

道真公の心情が想像されますね。

信じられないかもしれないですが、梅の木は道真公を追って一晩で太宰府まで飛んできたと言われています。
太宰府天満宮の境内に植えられている『飛梅』です。

もうすぐ、全国各地で、梅祭りが開催されるでしょう。
色とりどりの梅の花やその芳しい香りを楽しんでみるのもいいですね。
