As you may know the Emperor’s family crest is a chrysanthemum flower. 
But no one knows why its design was chosen.
We’ll share four theories.

The 82nd Emperor Gotoba(1180-1239) used chrysanthemum pattern for the purpose of showing ownership by putting it on his items including his swords. 

He descended from the throne in 1198 and tried to get back his power from the military government.
The military government started in 1192 when the samurai leader Minamoto Yoritomo was assigned as Shogun, though. 

Later, the Emperor Odaigo gave the swords with chrysanthemum pattern to his loyal subordinates. 
One was Samurai, Kusunoki Masashige.
He was allowed to use the chrysanthemum pattern as his family crest.
But he humbly refused and modified the crest that turn out to be half a chrysanthemum pattern with water stream design shown in the picture below.

The chrysanthemum flowers were chosen as the top four plants with virtue including orchid, plum blossom and bamboo in China.

So, these flowers might be also popular in family crests in Japan.
Trivia: Chrysanthemum flower is not indigenous to Japan.

The chrysanthemum flowers are known as the flowers which bloom last in season.
It means that they let others flourish first.
And they will follow other and flourish later. 

Emperor Hirohito (1901-1989) seems to embody this in his real life.
After the Great East Asia War or the WWII, the nation didn’t have living places and enough food. 

So, he rejected to built his new residence(palace) until when almost all the people have their living places and sufficient food. 

Actually, He lived in a kind of library because the palace was burnt due to firebombing of the U.S.
Since the library was built as a kind of bomb shelter, it was said to have high humidity.
You may see how it looks like through the photo below.

Can you imagine that he had kept living there until 1968?
He showed his motto “let others go first” like this.

In the old days, the design of the sun was used as the symbol of the king around Egypt, Israel and other middle eastern countries.

It looks similar to the chrysanthemum pattern of the emperor’s family crest. 

Emperor Gotoba might have seen this picture and was inspired by it; but this is just how I imagined it. 

Actually, the flags of the sun and the moon are raised at Ceremony of Accession.
So, this chrysanthemum pattern might symbolize the sun. 
Since Japan is also known as the country of rising the sun, it’s no wonder.
This is how my imagine it.

FYI: the floral language of the chrysanthemum flower is nobleness and integrity.

The pattern on the Japanese passport is also a single chrysanthemum flower pattern, while the emperor’s  is a double chrysanthemum flower pattern.

ご存知のように、天皇陛下（皇室）の家紋は菊の紋章です。
しかし、なぜそのデザインが選ばれたか詳細は分かっていません。
4つの説をご紹介します。

　第82代天皇であられる後鳥羽上皇が、剣を含む自らお使いになられる物に菊の紋が使われておりました。
1198年に譲位なされ、鎌倉幕府から権力を取り戻そうとなされました。
鎌倉幕府は、1192年に源頼朝が征夷大将軍に任命されて始まりました（最近では1185年という説もありますが、ただ自称していただけであるともいえます。正式に権威によって認められた幕府の開始として、ここでは1192年を採用しています）。

　のちに、後醍醐上皇は、忠臣であった楠木正成に菊の御紋の入った刀を下賜しました。
更に、菊の御紋を楠木家の家紋として使うことも許されました。
しかし、そのような畏れ多いことはできる訳もなく謹んで辞退申し上げ、上記図の様な菊の御紋を半分だけ残し、水の流れを下に付けたデザインを楠木家の家紋としました。

　菊の花は、蘭や梅、竹と共にChina*では四君子として選ばれていました。
だから、日本ではこれらの花々は家紋として人氣**があります。
因みに今一般に知られている菊は、日本の在来種ではありません。

（*中国は、本来日本の山陰地方を指します。ただ、1949年に建国された中華人民共和国の略称としても使われているため、混乱を避けるためここでは用いておりません。）
（**「気」の字はエネルギーを〆(しめ)てしまうと聞いてから、無限なエネルギーを含んだ「米」と書く旧字体の「氣」を好んで使っています。)

　菊は季節の最後に咲くことで知られています。
つまり、他の花々に先を譲っているともいえます。
そして、他の花々が咲いた冬の最後に続いて咲きます。

　昭和天皇は、この事を実生活で実践された様です。
大東亜戦争後、國民は生きていく場所も食べ物も十分ではありませんでした。
だから、天皇陛下は、ほぼ全ての國民に住む場所と食べ物が十分に行き渡るまで、新しい住居を建てられる事を拒否されました。

　実際に、アメリカ軍の爆撃により皇居は燃えてしまっていたので、天皇陛下は図書館の様な場所にお住まいでした。
この図書館は防空壕の役割も期待して造られた為、とても湿度が高かったと言われていました。
上の写真が、その建物です。

1968年まで、昭和天皇はそちらにお住まいだったなんて想像できますか。
「お先に」を実生活でなされておられたのです。

　古代、太陽の図案はエジプトや、イスラエル、他の中東の国々で王の印として使われていました。それは、天皇の家紋である菊の紋章にとてもよく似ています。
これは単なる私の想像ですが、後鳥羽上皇はこの絵を見て、閃いたのかもしれませんね。

　実際に、太陽と月の旗は、それぞれ即位の礼で掲げられます。
だから菊の紋様は、太陽を象徴しているのかもしれません。
日本が日出る国として知られているのも納得です。

菊の花言葉は、「高貴・高潔」です。
天皇陛下は、十六葉八重表菊ですが、日本國のパスポートのデザインは、一重の十六一重表菊です。
