The boulders made of pebbles in Ohmi Shrine/

Do you know the oldest national anthem in the world?

It’s Wilhelmus, the National Anthem of The Netherlands, which was made in 1568.
However, the oldest lyrics of the national anthem is the National Anthem of Japan called, “Kimigayo”

Here are the lyrics:

Kimigayoha (May your reign
Chiyoni yachiyoni (Continue for a thousand, eight thousand generations, )
Sazareishino Iwaoto narite (Until the pebbles grow into boulders)
Kokeno musumade (Lush with moss)

It is said that it includes the wish for the everlasting rule of the emperor.
But, is that all? Let’s see more.

The lyrics are taken from the Wakan Roueishu, an anthology of Waka poems compiled in the early 11th century.

What are Waka poems?
Waka poems consist of 5, 7, 5, 7, 7 letters, which is similar to the shortest poem, Haiku.
That consists of 5, 7, 5 letters.

That’s why the National Anthem of Japan is also known as the shortest national anthem because of its 31 letters.

Around that time, they sang this poem at the happy occasions.
Even though it’s the same lyrics, the meaning was different from the current one:
Kimigayoha (May your life
Chiyoni yachiyoni (Continue for a thousand, eight thousand generations, )
Sazareishino Iwaoto narite (Until the pebbles grow into boulders)
Kokeno musumade (Lush with moss)

So, people sang the poem to have congratulated one’s long life around that time.

Actually, there was the original poem for it in the Kokin Wakashu, another anthology of Waka poems compiled in the early 10th century.
However, the beginning part was a bit different like this:

Wagakimiha (May your love
Chiyoni yachiyoni (Continue for a thousand, eight thousand generations, )
Sazareishino Iwaoto narite (Until the pebbles grow into boulders)
Kokeno musumade (Lush with moss)

This poem was a love song.
We don’t know who made this poem.
But, we could guess how the song tells how much she loved him.
Since the poem might have been famous in the past, the anthology that the emperor ordered to make would have chosen it.
Hence, in many situations, it was included in storytelling, Kabukis, folk songs, etc.

It was the most popular poem for the Japanese people.
That’s why everyone agreed with the poem as the national anthem when the government chose the music for it in 1880s.

It’s touching that old Japanese people have sung the poem for more than one thousand years to pray for others’ love or long life, isn’t it?
Hence, in many situations, it was included in storytelling, Kabukis, folk songs, etc.

FYI: (For Your Information)

Some shrines in the premises have the boulders made of pebbles, which are mentioned in the national anthem.
The one in Ohmi Shrine located in Miyazaki prefecture is the biggest. (See the photo above).
The outer perimeter of the boulder is 30 meters and its height is 4 meters.
As you can see, there is a sacred straw rope called “Shimenawa”, with lightning-shaped white papers called “Shide”, which are the symbol of Kami, the deities.

What was the story of your country’s national anthem?
It would be great if you will share it. Comments below!
