Miniature suits of armor called ” Yoroi”

We are on a long holiday called, the Golden week that starts from April 29 to May 5.
It consists of four holidays, namely Showa Day, Constitution Memorial Day, Green Day, and Children’s Day.
If people can take a day off on May 6, their holiday might last until Sunday, May 8.

Showa Day is celebrated every April 29 which used to be the birthday of Emperor Hirohito.
Since 2007, Showa Day has been a holiday reflecting on the future of our country while looking back on the Showa Era that had revitalized Japan after turbulent times.

Constitution Memorial Day falls on May 3.
Japan’s Constitution was implemented on May 3, 1947 after promulgated on November 3, 1946, under the U.S. occupation.

Green Day falls on May 4. It was initially celebrated on April 29 after Emperor Hirohito departed this life.
It was moved to May 4 in 2007.
Green Day exists to foster rich minds in respecting nature and appreciating its blessings.

Children’s Day falls on May 5.
It’s the day when we value children’s personalities, make efforts for their happiness and appreciate our mother.
It used to be Boys’ Day which pairs up with “Hina-matsuri” dolls festival.
This holiday changes to “Children’s Day”after the World War II.
The Boys’ Day was to celebrate the healthy growth of the boys.
Warrior dolls and miniature suits of armor called “yoroi” (sometimes only armor helmet called kabuto“) are displayed inside the home and cloth streamers in the shape of carp called “koinobori” are flown outside.
Boys’ Day called “tango no sekku” was introduced from ancient China as a ceremony to drive away evil spirits.

Why does the ceremony relate to boys?
In Japan, we hang the leaves of sweet flag under the eaves which scatter strong smell to drive away evil sprits.
The sweet flag called “shoubu” in Japanese is homonym of fighting or thought of a martial art cherished. Also the shape of sweet flag leaf looks like a sword.
That’s why this ceremony came to recognize as boys’ day.

Why do we display cloth streamers in the shape of a carp in the air to celebrate on boys’ day?
During the Edo period(1603-1868), the boys’ day became more important.
When the shogunate, the leader of the military government had a baby boy, they started to celebrate on May 5th by flying flags in the air, not the carp shaped streamers.
Many samurai household followed this practice to celebrate their boys’ birth.
Later, this practice spread among the commoners ranked lower.
Especially the rich commoners started to celebrate it with a flag that carps are painted on flying in the air on a tall pole.
Because the carp was a symbol of success, according to the picture from ancient China that a carp swims up a waterfall.
And then, the flag on which a carp was painted changed  to cloth streamers in the shape of a carp.
In general, the black carp streamer symbols the father carp, while the red and blue ones represent the mother and child carp, respectively.
The flying it represents the parents and relatives’ wish that the boys will grow healthy and success in the future.

Do you have any practice to celebrate the healthy growth of the children in your country?
