Have you ever thought about the number of the family names in your country?

Japan is said to have around 130,000 family names.
It is the second largest number followed by the U.S.
80 % of them are topographical surnames.
Aside from that, surnames come from landscapes, directions of the compass, job titles, and so on.
For example, the surname “Mori”, “Nishi”, “Tatsumi”, “Ukai”   means forest,  west,  southeast, cormorant fishing, respectively.

In addition, there are the surnames “Satou”, “Itou”, “Katou”, which are derived from “Fujiwara”.
It’s because “Fuji” is pronounced as “tou” based on “on-yomi”.
Fujiwara was the surname of the aristocrats who had a strong  power from the middle of 7th to the middle of 11th centuries.
Some of these people (Satou, Itou, Katou) are not blood-related with Fujiwara clan.
They had received these names because they might have contributed to Fujiwara.

The popular surnames are “Satou” and “Suzuki”.
Sometimes, you may find a few Satou or Suzuku among your co-workers.
However, the population of two names occupies only 2 % of the total population, which means there are so many surnames in Japan.

There are the surnames of cricket and eel.
On the other hand, there are a part of the surnames that has insects such as bees, cicada, spider, butterfly and so on.

One of the unique names is April 1st, called “Watanuki” which means to remove cotton from kimono.
In the old days, we put cotton in kimono to keep ourselves warm.
And then, we  would  remove it after April 1st.
Other unique surnames are smile, nostril hair, detour, vinegar,  soy sauce, soy bean paste, kelp and ogre.

The shortest names are the five vowels A, I, U, E and O, which mean crow, well, cormorant (bird), bay and tail respectively.
Other short names also have consonant sounds like Ta which means rice field, etc.
On the other hand, the longest names consist of five kanjis, 勘解由小路(Ka・ge・yu・no・ko・u・ji) and 左衛門三郎(Sa・e・mo・n・sa・bu・ro・u)
